A Teenage Disaster

Sarah and Rachel had known, and hated, each other their entire life. As mean, popular girls- they were always comparing looks and competing for guys and attention. They each spent an absurd amount of money on clothes and plastic surgery in order to be the most beautiful girl in their high school. One day, a popular football player asked out Rachel on a date in front of the entire school. Sarah, enraged that she was not the one asked out, felt ashamed and embarrassed. She began to question how attractive she was and went looking for confirmation. After some thought, she decided to have a modeling competition with Sarah to prove who was prettier. Sarah readily agreed because she had no doubt that she would win. The news of the competition spread around the entire school, and soon even the teachers and administration were involved. The principle decided to set up a time and place where the girls would walk down runways and compete for their classmates votes in a pageant-style competition. Nearly everyone in the school thought it was absurd, but decided to go anyways because they would get free food at the event. In the evening, the competition began and classmates would cast their votes for either Sarah or Rachel. Towards the end of the night, Sarah stepped on Rachel's dress causing it to rip in front of everyone. Enraged, Rachel started to scream and punched Sarah. As their dresses were destroyed and their hair was ripped, they ended up destroying the vote counting table and creating a fire which burned away any possible chance of finding the winner of this competition. The principle heard of the fight and broke it up before anyone in the audience could get injured. However, both Rachel and Sarah were put in detention- and ever since that day have had unresolved drama.

Author's Note:

This story is based on the plight in 'The Bush Cow and the Elephant'. In that story, it explains why the bush cow and the elephants are always fighting and making a mess in local markets.I decided to change it into a modern day 'cat fight' between two popular girls in high school. Although the pageant is not likely to happen in real life, there seems to always be drama involving teenage girls. I hope you enjoyed!

    Hi Katie,
    I love the approach that you took with this story! I did something very similar in my Indian Epics course by taking an epic and making the story about a family in a modern neighborhood with a single mom. The teenage cat fight is super relatable to any reader because we've all been through high school and/or watched some 2000s show! I loved reading about the cat-fight and rivalry. Great job!

    Hey Katie,
    How easy is it to picture yourself in high school and something ridiculous like this is going on! I am so thankful I made it out of high school, alive haha. I think flipping the classic story into a teenager story was a fun way to get the theme across. You did a great job writing this story so it was clear that these 2 girls were enemies. Even though the pageant between the 2 is unlikely to happen in real life, it's not all that hard to picture something very similar happening in a cafeteria!

    Hello!
    I like your retelling of the story. That was a great idea of making it modern-day. I had Mean Girls feeling while reading. However, there is a mistake in one of the sentences, and I think it was an honest mistake. It still needs to be corrected because it's confusing for the reader.

    You said, " Sarah, enraged," and, "she decided to have a modeling competition," and then, "Sarah readily agreed."

    This needs to be fixed because you were in what seems to be Sarah's point of view. You say Sarah is enraged and looked for confirmation, which is fine, the problem lies with saying Sarah agreed. Isn't she the one who decided it? Your story would be improved, if you wrote something like, Sarah approached Rachel with the idea of a competition.

    I hope this helps, and I can't wait to see what else you write.

 The Old Woman and Her Pig When I read this story, it seemed as if this was written to be more of a riddle than a story. The way the story flowed and the sentences were structured was a bit unusual compared to most stories. However, I really enjoyed reading it because it seemed like something I might have heard in my childhood.  The story began with introducing an old woman. She lived in a little house and she noticed one day that it was dirty and needed to be swept. So, she decided to clean the house and while she was sweeping, she came across a crooked sixpence. Topic Brainstorm

[Elephant. Image Information. ]   Topic 1: Elephant Fables Elephants are remarkable creatures, and are among my favorite animals. I currently do not know of any folklore stories about elephants, so I am interested in reading some. I would like to learn how elephants are portrayed in the storytelling world. Are they gentle giants? Are they beasts? A combination? I would love to read different stories to see all the ways the elephant is represented.  Topic 2: Dog Fables In my experience, dogs are such sweet and kind animals. I am aware there is an abundance of dog fables, however I do not know much about them. I am interested in seeing how the representation of dogs in stories has evolved over the years. Maybe in the beginning they were seen more as beast, and then slowly throughout history their image changed to become more of 'man's best friend'.
