Week 2 Story: Dog Fighting

[Rottweiler. Web Source .] Story: Dog Fighting A dog fighting company was known to capture aggressive dogs off the street to protect the public. Once the dogs were captured, they then were placed in fighting arenas. This not only lessened the numbers of aggressive dogs, but also provided endless entertainment to a paying audience. The funds from the fight allowed the business to stay in operation. All of the dogs there were ruthless, destructive creatures that did not care for the lives of humans or other animals. It was not unusual for dogs to only survive through one fight in these rings.  One day while the company van was patrolling the streets, the came across a stray rottweiler that was growling and chasing after a man. The employees jumped out of the van in order to aid the man, quickly capturing the rottweiler. The dog was then brought to the entertainment site and was scheduled to take place in the fighting that night. Nightfall came and the Rottweiler was put into the ring.

Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

Reading Notes: Fables [The Lion's Share  by Heighway ] The Lion's Share The Lion's Share was an interesting read due to, in my opinion, the setup of the story. The lion and three others go on a hunt where they successful kill a stag for food. One would think that since there were four of them, the rewards should be split four ways. It seems that is what happening at first, with the lion telling the others to cut the stag into fours. However, once it comes time for dividing up the stag, the lion announces that he will be taking all portions for four different reasons: being the king of beasts, being the arbiter, participating in the chase, and his intimidation factor. The fox responds by saying that the Lion shares the labors, but not the rewards. The character of the lion in this story is one that is selfish and entitled. He gladly will accept help when it comes to difficult tasks (such as the hunt), but uses his power and reputation to secure the rewards all for himself.

Other stories I picked like,

Time Strategies

[ Time Management Picture ] Article 1: The Important Habit of Just Starting This article captured my attention because so often I feel as if the hardest part of an assignment is just getting started. I enjoyed reading this article because it dove into the psychology of beginning and completing an assignment and touched on the importance of setting time slots dedicated to a certain task. I use a planner to map out every week, and although it doesn't have time slot to-dos for every hour of the day, it gives me a general outline and helps me stay motivated and on tasks throughout the week. Article 2: The Psychology of Checklists I personally use a checklist in my planner, so I was drawn to click on this article. I have studied the effects of dopamine, but never specifically the direct correlation of checklists and dopamine release. Therefore I was excited to see relationship between the two and how a simple action can have an impact in our productivity and sense of accomplishment

Technology

[ Tech Circle Image ] My first impression of the technology used in this class is I am grateful that it will apply to my life after the end of this course. The majority, if not all, my classes use canvas and don't take advantage of other platforms that I will likely be using in the future. I have a lot of experience with technology, so I feel comfortable with the programs being used in this course. However, I am looking forward to using website publisher because that is something I have only done a few times and I would like more experience with it.

Class Assignments

[ Assignments Image ] My first impressions of this course were very different than what I thought this class would be like. I thought this would be a standard, lecture-driven course with standard note taking and exams. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this class involves blogging and storytelling. This seems much more interactive to me and I think I will enjoy learning about the material and creating my own stories. I am excited to see how the semester progresses and how I can use my creativity (in storytelling) to help with my understanding of the material.

Growth Mindset

[ Growth Mindset Image ] I had not previously heard of Carol Dweck, however I had heard of the growth mindset before. It was a term I briefly studied it in a psychology textbook while preparing for the MCAT, and that is when I first began to reflect on my individual mindset. Recently, I see myself as having a very growth-driven outlook. However, in the past, I used to get discouraged easily by bad grades and other peoples opinions to the point where I was in a fixed mindset throughout a portion of high school. Thankfully, when college began I was surrounded by new people and was able to escape from the fixed way of thinking and more into reflecting on what I could achieve. I am very interested in learning more about the growth-fixed mindset and how it applies to mythology/folklore.

Introduction

All About Me Hey! My name is Katie and I am currently a senior at the University of Oklahoma. When people say time flies by in college, they aren't kidding! I feel like it was just yesterday that I moved into the dorms freshman year, and now within a couple of months I will be moving on to something new. I am currently studying biopsychology as a pre-medical student. I really enjoy sciences so I have enjoyed almost all of my classes I have takes throughout undergraduate so far. I spent the summer studying for the MCAT, and am currently in the process of applying to medical school! This semester I am excited for my classes, but anxious about how they will turn out with all of them online. However, it is important to be flexible, especially in a pandemic, so I am hoping to make the most of it! Besides academics, I love playing volleyball and doing other activities with my friends. My junior year I was the president of the OU Women's Club Volleyball team, and enjoyed traveling to

Storybook Favorites

[ Storybook Image ] Storybook 1: To Have a Tiger By the Tale This story captivated my attention from the beginning simply due to the fact it mentions a tiger. I love animals so this initially drew me into the story, and the introduction upheld my interest. The introduction began with information about tigers in the wild and their relationship with people throughout time. Although interesting, what really hooked my attention was the author's desire to disprove the "villainous" image of the tiger and showing that the role of the villain in this relationship lies more with the humans.  Storybook 2: The Stolen Child's Perspective Just from reading the title, I had a good idea of what this story would be about. This sounded like it could be a mystery, with an interesting perspective so I immediately was drawn to it. After reading the introduction, I liked reading about the resemblances to other well-known stories. I thought the design of the blog was fitting in such it

Dog Park: My Favorite Place

My favorite place is a dog park because it's always such a happy place and a great way to meet new dog and people friends. In addition, there are dog parks in nearly every city, so no matter where I am- I always have a fun place to take my dog and have a good time.     ( Dog Park Image )
